Review before your sessionWhat to bring
Bring paper, pencil, black pen, and one leaf or herb sprig per person. Don’t forget a delicious bevvy to sip, preferably with something creamy on top.
How the hour flows
10 min: Mindful observation. Notice your sprig and what you like about it—color, scent, curves, poky parts, or anything unique. Imagine how you will capture those elements on paper. Touch and reposition your sprig several ways; notice how it changes shape, captures light differently, or looks ugly or beautiful. It is yours to draw. 30 min: Sketch the sprig in several positions to find your favorite. Start with the stem and structure, noticing differences in size, strength, and color as your eyes move around the shape. 20 min: Move to shading, adding shadows and light. Do not worry if it is not perfect. Your living sprig will likely have imperfections and unique traits—give them life on your paper. Let it look however it looks: sophisticated or simple, straight or droopy, strong or withered. Shade the space holding it too, however you like. 15 min: Show and tell. Notice how everyone in the group can interpret a simple sprig very differently. You have done it—artwork!
